For approximately 100 km (60 mi.) both the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers run parallel and when they reach Canal Flats at the south end of Columbia Lake the two rivers are less than 2 km (1.2 mi.) apart. The Columbia River from its source flows north while the Kootenay River continues flowing south.

Eroded rock formations called the Dutch Creek hoodoos can be seen above the south end of Columbia Lake and there are pulloffs spots near the Dutch Creek bridge. Columbia Lake is a great place for fishing and swimming. It is well used as a put-in site for persons planning to canoe or kayak the Columbia River.
